The Fat Flush Plan Buy this product from Amazon

Author : Ann Louise Gittleman
Edition : 1
Number of Pages : 288
Publisher : McGraw-Hill

The keys to overweight are liver toxicity, waterlogged tissues, fear of eating fat, excess insulin, and stress, asserts nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman. Her Fat Flush Plan addresses these problems with a targeted diet.

The Fat Flush Plan, filled with nutritional analysis and detailed explanations, is not a quick read. Despite Gittleman’s assertion that the plan is “as easy as 1-2-3,” it is quite regimented. No white flour, white sugar, margarine, vegetable shortening, artificial sweeteners, or caffeine. The diet emphasizes essential oils (e.g., flaxseed and GLA), protein (eight ounces or more, plus two eggs a day), vegetables, thermogenic spices (e.g., ginger and cayenne), water, and diuretic beverages (eight glasses/day of diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice). In its first two-week phase, the plan is a rigid, low calorie (1,100-1,200 calories/day), low-carb (no grains or starchy vegetables) diet. Phase two lets you increase your calories to 1,500 and add two “friendly carbs.” Phase three, the “lifestyle program,” moderately adds more dairy, carbs, and calories. Gittleman promotes walking and recommends strength training in phase three.

The book includes 41 recipes such as Grilled Lamb Chops with Cinnamon and Coriander, Breakfast Egg Fu Yung, and Cumin Sautéed Scallops. The Fat Flush Plan is recommended for dieters willing to commit to a strict plan for weight loss. –Joan Price

Faculty Perceptions of Characteristics Needed for Clinical Success at Military Nurse Anesthesia Programs Buy this product from Amazon

Publisher : Storming Media

Product Description

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A919453. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this exploratory descriptive study an investigator-developed survey tool was used to describe military clinical faculty’s perception of characteristics nurse anesthesia students need for success at clinical training sites. Participants consisted of 29 clinical faculty from the Army, Air Force, and Navy clinical training sites. The survey tool consisted of a quantitative part with 35 characteristics divided into the four major categories: academic knowledge, nursing knowledge, clinical skills, and personal characteristics. Validity and reliability testing was performed on this part of the survey tool. The second part of the survey tool includes seven qualitative questions designed to help obtain a complete list of characteristics needed for success. The literature was sparse regarding predictors of clinical success in post-graduate education. In the study by Hansen and Pozehl (1995) non-nursing grade point average (GPA) was the only significant predictor of clinical GPA. This gap in the literature regarding predicators of clinical success led the investigators to the first step, describe what expert faculty in the specialty thought were the characteristics needed for success. The clinical faculty rated 28 of the 35 characteristics as Essential or Important for clinical success. All four categories had characteristics that were scored high. The highest scores were given to the personal characteristics category and clinical awareness. Qualitative analysis of the seven additional questions further supported the importance of personal characteristics.

Format : Roughcut
Author : Gary Taubes
Edition : 1
Number of Pages : 640
Release Date : 2007-09-25
Publisher : Knopf

Product Description

In this groundbreaking book, the result of seven years of research in every science connected with the impact of nutrition on health, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet with more and more people acting on this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues persuasively that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar, easily digested starches) and sugars–via their dramatic and longterm effects on insulin, the hormone that regulates fat accumulation–and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. There are good calories, and bad ones.

Good Calories
These are from foods without easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. These foods can be eaten without restraint.
Meat, fish, fowl, cheese, eggs, butter, and non-starchy vegetables.

Bad Calories
These are from foods that stimulate excessive insulin secretion and so make us fat and increase our risk of chronic disease—all refined and easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. The key is not how much vitamins and minerals they contain, but how quickly they are digested. (So apple juice or even green vegetable juices are not necessarily any healthier than soda.)
Bread and other baked goods, potatoes, yams, rice, pasta, cereal grains, corn, sugar (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup), ice cream, candy, soft drinks, fruit juices, bananas and other tropical fruits, and beer.

Taubes traces how the common assumption that carbohydrates are fattening was abandoned in the 1960s when fat and cholesterol were blamed for heart disease and then –wrongly–were seen as the causes of a host of other maladies, including cancer. He shows us how these unproven hypotheses were emphatically embraced by authorities in nutrition, public health, and clinical medicine, in spite of how well-conceived clinical trials have consistently refuted them. He also documents the dietary trials of carbohydrate-restriction, which consistently show that the fewer carbohydrates we consume, the leaner we will be.

With precise references to the most significant existing clinical studies, he convinces us that there is no compelling scientific evidence demonstrating that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease, that salt causes high blood pressure, and that fiber is a necessary part of a healthy diet. Based on the evidence that does exist, he leads us to conclude that the only healthy way to lose weight and remain lean is to eat fewer carbohydrates or to change the type of the carbohydrates we do eat, and, for some of us, perhaps to eat virtually none at all.

The 11 Critical Conclusions of Good Calories, Bad Calories:

1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, does not cause heart disease.
2. Carbohydrates do, because of their effect on the hormone insulin. The more easily-digestible and refined the carbohydrates and the more fructose they contain, the greater the effect on our health, weight, and well-being.
3. Sugars—sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup specifically—are particularly harmful. The glucose in these sugars raises insulin levels; the fructose they contain overloads the liver.
4. Refined carbohydrates, starches, and sugars are also the most likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and the other common chronic diseases of modern times.
5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating and not sedentary behavior.
6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter any more than it causes a child to grow taller.
7. Exercise does not make us lose excess fat; it makes us hungry.
8. We get fat because of an imbalance—a disequilibrium—in the hormonal regulation of fat tissue and fat metabolism. More fat is stored in the fat tissue than is mobilized and used for fuel. We become leaner when the hormonal regulation of the fat tissue reverses this imbalance.
9. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels are elevated, we stockpile calories as fat. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from our fat tissue and burn it for fuel.
10. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbohydrates make us fat and ultimately cause obesity. By driving fat accumulation, carbohydrates also increase hunger and decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism and physical activity.
11. The fewer carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be.

Good Calories, Bad Calories is a tour de force of scientific investigation–certain to redefine the ongoing debate about the foods we eat and their effects on our health.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A125073. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The movement of health care out of the hospital and into the community has created a climate in which the knowledge and skills of masters- prepared community health nurses (CHNs) are sorely needed. Investigations focusing on the skills and knowledge of the CHN have relied primarily on the perceptions of potential employers and administrators, community health nursing leaders, or community health nurses with varying educational levels. However, studies have not examined utilization of the masters-prepared CHN. This descriptive study examined the employment patterns of masters-prepared CHNs and consequent skill and knowledge utilization on the job. Surveys were mailed out to %55 masters-prepared CHNs as identified by the Board of Nursing in six states (Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Wyoming) to determine current employment setting and the knowledge and skills utilized in that setting.
